Evaluation plsss?!

by argenico » Thu Dec 11, 2008 5:14 pm
Hi!

I am a 21 year old BCOM student at the University of British Columbia focus on marketing.

Work Experience
I have been working full time most of my first year, and all of my second and third year of university to help pay off tuition. The work in question was for an renewable energy firm with branches in Canada, US, Latinamerica and Europe. I worked as the Accounting Assistant (book keeping, managing A/P, payroll, audit etc etc), Marketing (representing the firm at conferences, presenting to panels of investors, general PR + IR) and now Finance + Operations (making financial forecasts and plant operation schedules). I worked in Canada and in the US for this firm.

I also did work for a local first nations firm in Vancouver making marketing materials and general brand consulting.

GMAT
Just took it today for the first time

650 (80%)

Q 47 (79%)
V 34 (69%)

Undergrad Degree
GPA 3.1 **Estimate
(UBC has a different grading system, 80% and above is an A with class averages usually around 68% in my program).
My overall average so far is 73%.
My upper class average so far is 79% (no electives).
A > 80%
B > 68%
C > 60%
D > 50%
F < 50%

Other
Hispanic / European Origin, fluent in spanish and english, and conversational italian. Teach martial arts in free time, used to compete and train people to compete. Also do personal training for people, and freelance marketing materials (i.e. brochures, logos, websites etc) using Adobe suite. Completely self taught, and recognized as expert.

I am currently applying to Georgetown and American University. I would like to know if I would be considered a competitive candidate in particular since I will be graduating in May, and would love to start the program in September. Also, any suggestions for other recommended MBA programs are always welcome :)

Thanks a lot in advance!

You seem like an exceptional individual with many unique qualities and achievements. You will certainly get into a great MBA program some day. For you, it seems clear you are too young. While nothing can be said for certain from this end, just checking the stats from your two schools shows that you face extremely long odds.

I suggest you take a couple of years and then apply. You'll end up getting a lot more out of the experience anyways. Business school is more fun and more valuable when you can relate better to the experiences and perspectives of your classmates.

GEORGETOWN STATS:
Georgetown University (McDonough) MBA Program

Mean months of postgraduate work experience: 62

Middle 80% range postgraduate work experience From: 35 to: 99

Percentage of new entrants with one year or less of postgraduate work experience: 1

Mean age (rounded to nearest year): 28

Middle 80% range age (years) From 25 to 32

AMERICAN UNIVERSITY STATS:

Mean months of postgraduate work experience: 48

Middle 80% range postgraduate work experience From: 24 to: 84

Percentage of new entrants with one year or less of postgraduate work experience: 8

Mean age (rounded to nearest year): 27

Middle 80% range age (years) From 24 to 30

Thanks for the quick reply!

I was just wondering, other than age, do you consider my profile to be competitive for these schools? I know I can do very well on my essays and interviews, and I have seen that 22 year olds have enrolled at these schools. Unfortunately I do not have access to their profiles, so I have no idea of how I gage compared to them.

I will in all likelihood still apply to these two schools, see how I do. I am aiming for R2 now in January... so we will see... I do not have much to loose really :)

I applaud your determination. I absolutely agree-you have nothing to lose. Even if you don't get into your target school, you'll be able to apply in the future with nothing held against you.

You'll have a much better shot at American University than at Georgetown. You're 30 points below Gtown's GMAT avergage, but 70 points above American's average.

Your unique history needs to be your silver bullet. You have some outstanding skills that need to packaged perfectly to give you the best change possible. It's a hard balance to hit--you need to demonstrate your skills without sounding boastful.

I would focus your application under the theme of a very specific career goal. demonstrate that you are a relentlessly driven individual that has specific items that you want to accomplish right now. The most important part of the application essay will be answering the 'why now' part of the career essay.

I'd be happy to offer some assistance with that essay for free (or any other essay). All the best,

Jay
