Telephone Digit

q: In the telephone # 936-215X, what digit X represent?

i) Only one digit in the telephone number is greater than X
ii) X is the greatest of digits not among the telephone number's first six digits

i) Insuff: because 9 is the only digit greater than X=8 or 7

I don't quite understand what ii) is trying to say. Please Help.

guess ii says: x is a max possible digit, but different from any of the first 6 digits.

max digit is 9, which is already in the first 6, so the next possible digit is 8, so x must be 8.

I interpret statement 2 to be sufficient. You know the first six digitis. You know the greatest number not included in the first six digits is 8 (although the actual answer really isn't that important). If an 8 replaced the 5 that is currently in the first six digits, then the greatest number not included would be 7, and so on.

Thank you guys. It does make sense. I wasn't sure how to interpret it because I thought the answer could again be either 8 or 7. But I see it now. The stem is asking to take the max of the digits that is not present in the first six digits.
