Shortlisted B & C because both uses correct idiom from... to...

But i picked C because 'were' is correct compared to 'had'.

You should have learned in the MGMAT book that "had been" is used to distinguish between two past events. "Had been" is used for the even that occurred earlier.

Since we know that the family losing all their money gambling caused them to lose their home, we cannot use had been for the later event because that violates the rules given above. Therefore, (C) must be the right answer.
