I would go with E.
Not as X but as Y is the correct idiom right?
Here they in option E clearly refers to the Denim Jeans.

Please let me know if the reasoning sounds good

IMO C or E comes close to being right. A, B are wrong as they incorrectly use "their", it should be "them". D is just wrong because it is unidiomatic. Between C and E I go for E as i think C fails the idiomatic test IMO

I go for A.

Idiom that you need to know by heart.
not as much....as.... (this idiom is a negative form of "as much as")
Therefore.....

A. Denim jeans were originally worn not so much as a fashion statement as for their being practical work clothes. (CORRECT)
B. Denim jeans were originally worn not so much as a fashion statement but for their being practical work clothes.
C. Denim jeans were originally worn not so much as a fashion statement but for being practical work clothes
D. Denim jeans were originally worn not as a fashion statement as for them being practical work clothes.
E. Denim jeans were originally worn not as a fashion statement but as for them being practical work clothes

for E, even though it's parallel.. (not as... but as...) it's not parallel .... part.

I would guess C. I've noticed that the less wordy an answer is the more likely it is to be right.

Focus on the second part after the conjunction but.
The "them" is implied and doesn't need to be repeated.

Whats the OA?
