740/97% (48Q/84% 44V/97%)

I took the exam last week with results that would probably please most, but were quite disappointing to me. I wanted the score both to apply to schools for the fall and to look for work in the test-prep teaching industry, so I was aiming for 99th percentile. For applying to schools, 740 is obviously ok, but I just missed the mark for teaching. I had scored 770 on both GMAT prep tests and thought I was ready.

So, I've scheduled another exam for March 16th and have exactly 4 weeks to improve my quant a little. Prior to this test I hadn't done much prep... I just read through three of the MGMAT books and did the problems in the chapters I found challenging (combinatorics, probabilty, statistics... of course I had like 1 question in total from these categories lol), did the last 100 problems in the OG PS and DS, and worked through the math sections of MGMAT's practice tests. My Quant score on the real test was consistant with the 47-49 I got on MGMAT and GMAT Prep tests... was expecting my Verbal to be better to balance it out.

My plan now is to more seriously go through all 5 MGMAT books for total content mastery rather than just looking for holes in my knowledge, and through the OG more carefully, this time looking not at whether I can understand each problem I get wrong, but thinking carefully about each and every place that I start to get stuck or confused. After that, do the same with the MGMAT and GMAT prep tests.

Any other suggestions for improving Quant from 47-49 to 49-51?

I'm not worried about verbal and actually consider my 44 to be a fluke because both GMAT prep tests I scored 49 taking the test late at night, while partially falling asleep, and generally I have no problems in Verbal. I suppose test day stress/stamina may have factored in a bit, as well as some personal stress I've been under due to a tumultuous relationship and the long term sleep deprivation that has resulted from this (I haven't slept properly since New Years). Probably a bit of bad luck too.

My AWA went smoothly and I fully expect 6's.

Anyway, that's my test day experience and plans for the next round. Thanks for reading!

For what????? 740 is enough for happy life! Forget about your GMAT!
EVERY score above 700 is perfect score! Insted of improving your quant do something that will make you an interesting candidate!
If you will score 51-51 and get 800 points and only this score will be your advantage - forget about B-school. You will not be able to make a contribution to your team.

Again, forget about your GMAT. Do not make others to think of you as a crazy man. Prepare your application - your score is perfect! You are in the top 3% of test takers and still hesitate?

Score is just a preliminary round of filtering to all schools . Its just the tip of a ic-berg .. No difference between 740 and 780 at all absolutely.. You can probably dedicate your effort to profile building.. do something in these four weeks which will add up value to your profile..

I suggest you to consult someone before you take up the exam again.

I remember my instructor saying that if you are taking up another attempt above 680 , Its just an indication that you are trying to cover up some of your negative aspects of profile.

No normal human-being would differentiate a 780 candidate from 740 candidate.

Agree with 4meonly and Jeevan! Sometimes we get too obsessed with the the number. Like 4meonly said IMO anything 700-above is virtually treated the same. Then the profile and a convincing APP comes in to play.

DGblkbelt,
If I were u then I would not retake it as 740 is an excellent score & u have a balanced quant/Verbal scaled scores which makes it all the more juicy.

Regards,
CR

I'm hesitating because I want to teach GMAT classes at schools that require a 99th percentile score, and know I can get a 99%tile score with a little more math work and a little more sleep :)

Absolutely there is little reason to retest to help my applications.

Unlikely :) Like I said my Verbal was unusually low for me, and if I brush up my math for the next 4 weeks it may be a little higher.

So, anyone have any math improvement ideas other than what I suggested in my first post?

DGblkbelt,

I would suggest trying the GMATClub tests ($80 for a 25 math tests). I've tried 5 of these tests so far, and I have found them challenging.

Give it a try with the free Math test they offer and see how you feel about it. You've got nothing to loose. :D

Good luck.
