Hi,

I first thought the answer is B but correct answer seems D - Dose it mean that 1) since we can say "NO" to the statement? (because the question is asking whether x/y is negative, but 1) statment confirms positive....)

1. If x=y , then x/y = 1
1>0 . Hence sufficient

2. If x = -y , then x/y = -1
-1<0 . Hence sufficent

Notable Point is that two statements can give different answers. But it shouldn't worry us.

The question is x/y <0 (lessthan). Your answer to the 1st statement is x/y>0 (greaterthan). Can you confirm.

A statement is sufficient if it answers a always YES or a always NO to the question..

Stmt 1 will yield a always NO to the question, Is x/y<0 and is therefore sufficient

and the answer to the question is D .. even if a statement gives a -ve answer for a "is" DS ... it still means that the statment is enuf to answer the DS ..
