Just wanted to check weather my answer is correct or not...

For the explaination:

Were it not for X and Y,

instead is wrong..changes the meaning of sentence A and B eliminated
would have been collapsing...present continous...C elim
In E, its is used wrongly...E elim

IMO: D :)

Only C and D are in contention for being answers for the simple fact that the modifier needs to be close to the noun it is modifying, which clearly is "a star"

C can be disregarded for the fact that it unnecessarily uses the progressive tense and also is wordy

So Choice D best fits
