weeeee 600 today

I'm actually pretty happy to have scored a 600 today (Q38 V35) after about 2 weeks of studying stuff I hadn't done in 4 years.. my practice tests were 500 and 520. I think the difference was the actual experience and better concentration. Def a big thank you to you guys this forum helped a lot.

A couple questions -

What kinda school will 600 get you in.. with everything else on the resume pretty solid?

Should I re-take the test knowing I can score a lot higher given proper preparation and experience?

What does the AWA portion have to do with the scoring?

To answer some of your questions:

1. 600 will put you into contention at mid-range schools. It's probably too low for Stanford, Wharton, etc. That said, the GMAT is certainly not the most important factor; 600 is good enough that many schools will look at the rest of your application and base the decision more on other factors.

2. There is certainly no harm in trying again with some study. Most schools only look at the highest score, so if you put in a few more weeks and get, say, 650, you're be in excellent shape.

3. The AWA score is graded 0-6 and does not factor into your 200-800 score. Basically, anything over 4.0 is good enough.

theres prolly a link here about scoring but...please help out.. i searched but found little...

but could anyone clarify on what vpjim meant by anything over a 4.0 is good enough?

for example when you get your gmat score you also get a awa score???
so therefore when you send your scores to schools they will see your awa score? do they not weigh it as heavily etc etc.??? just tyring to get an idea on the scoring thanks all!

I believe an AWA score of 4.0 is around average. Since a lot of schools don't stress the AWA score as much as the GMAT score, you're okay with a 4.0 AWA score. I believe your AWA score follows your GMAT score wherever it shall go.
