GMAT Scores - Low then High?

by goblue2010 » Sun Jan 18, 2009 5:26 pm
Hello,

I've recently taken the GMAT twice and have scored a 630 and then a 590. I was scoring in the 690's during practice tests before my second test, but I bombed the verbal section in the second test.

I am committed to getting at least a 680, if not a 700. If I were able to accomplish this, how much would it hurt to have gotten a 630 and the 590 before that? I am looking to go to a top 10 school.

Additionally, I have a 3.7 GPA from University of Michigan and I have gotten a slew of A's in both quantitative (Calculus, Statistics, Accounting) and qualitative (Psych, History, English, Philosophy) courses.

I also started a business in the Vision Correction industry, which I believe gives me unique work experience.

I am also interested in admissions consulting and I'd like to talk to someone at your company.

Thanks,

Daniel

Dear Daniel,

It will not hurt that you have taken the test 3 times. Schools use your highest total score in your evaluation. Be sure to give yourself enough prep time before your next attempt and really hone in on the sections giving you the most trouble.

Thanks Lisa,

So even if I got a 590, a 700 would in essence wipe that 590 out of the picture?

Is taking the exam once and getting a 700 on the first shot any stronger than getting a 590 first and then a 700?

Dear Daniel,

It is not that it looks better to increase your score or that previous scores are disregarded, it is just important to do the best you can on the GMAT. Schools use the highest total score in your evaluation, whether it is the first attempt or the third attempt.

Lisa
