Profile Evaluation - European B Schools

by timedout » Mon Jan 12, 2009 11:57 pm
Hi there,

I wanted your opinion on which schools would be ideal keeping in mind my career goals and profile.

Career Goal - Marketing Consultancy. This would be a career switch from,

Current (and previous work exp) -
Currently VP-Business Development at digital advertising company. Setup the sales units in the company as its a fairly new company having started approx 6 years ago with 150 odd employees. I joined them in Oct 06. Have been responsible for the complete biz development team of 25+ managers and below. The company is one of the few recognised and successful digital advertising cos here in India.

Previously i have worked with, starting from the earliest -
A tech firm as a marketing intern (or management trainee as they are called here) - 2 years - handling all branding and sales support activities for a major consumer program launch.
Citigroup - 1 year front line sales management in the retail assets team. Leading a team of 50+.
Leading Pvt Indian Bank - 2.3 years - again retail assets sales; managing a sales team of 150+; part of team which led the banks foray into the market.

In all jobs, i have been amongst the fastest to be promoted; have steadily grown as far as responsibility is concerned.
The current job is in a senior mgmt role and i should get very positive references.

Acads -
I already have an MBA from a (top 10) Indian B-school; with a specialisation in mktg. i scored a 65% during this, top 15% in the university.
graduate degree in Commerce from a leading university, not very strong acads. Again @ 63%. But i have strong extra currics during this period.

extra-Curriculars
President Student Body in High School.
Second in National Youth Parliament.
Editor campus magazine during graduation.
Part of the college football and cricket teams. From high school to MBA.
President of local festival committee.
Last 1 year, part of the Teach India initiative - teaching children who cant afford formal schooling.
Presented paper on India's macro-economic policy in a state level competition during graduation. Selected the 2nd best paper.
Other awards for debates, elocution, etc in school and college.

GMAT score - 670 (quant 48, verbal 34);
verbal was a huge disappointment as i felt completely drained physically during the paper. Had scored 41 in verbal in my second GMAT prep just a couple of days before the paper. .

Target schools -

I intend to persue MBA from a European school (essentially because the programs are 12-18 months in duration and i can finish them much earlier than a US program). I shall be 30 this march, and time is running out.

I would have liked to apply to schools like Insead, IE Madrid, LBS but my poor GMAT has put a spanner in the works so to speak.

What do you suggest -

a - Would i be competitive in my target schools given my profile. If not, which schools would be down my alley?

b - Would giving the GMAT again, if i get to 710+ level, make a huge difference? Though it would mean delaying applications further.

Thanks in advance.

Dear timedout,

While your 670 might be below the average for your target schools, I don't think you are so far below that you are out of range. Taking the test again and increasing your score at least 30 points might help, so you should consider retaking it if you feel you can increase your score to the 700+ range. As for other schools in the EU that might be a back up plan, I would suggest looking at our sticky on school selection for some tips. There are many great options in Europe, like RSM (the Netherlands), Bocconi (Italy), HEC (France) and Oxford (UK), to name a few that don't get mentioned much.

Best of luck,
Lisa

Hey Lisa,

Thanks for the advice. I have decided to give GMAT another go in Apr.

So i shall be back to you soon, hopefully with a much better score..

BTW, is Manchester B-School any good for a marketing consultancy career. I have a pre-app interview with them towards the end of this month.
