GMAT 670 - need to make a decision

by knarayan » Sun Jan 11, 2009 5:43 am
I just took the GMAT and scored a 670 (V45, V37). This is a little disappointing for me, since I know I got just a little behind on the verbal..I have been able to score over 37 a few times during my prep and I know with just a little better time management at the end, I could push up my score 10-20 points. My quant is about fine, I have never been about to score near 50 in that area.

My target schools are Kellogg and Chicago for the part time program, and I am tantalizingly close to their average accepted GMAT score -- about 690. I am wondering if I shoudl retake the GMAT and try to score a little higher -- I have never been one to score in the mid 700s, but I felt like I could at least touch the 700-710 mark.

Any suggestions on what a good approach would be? I dont want to lose all my prep and have to re-do it again, I am wondering if I should try again in a month. or just let it go and focus on my apps. I have a 3.7 GPA in and what should be a good all round application (save for my low GMAT score).

Dear Karthik,

Your GMAT score is just below the average, so it is a tough call on whether or not you should expend resources taking the test again. With a high GPA and a "good all around application", your efforts might be better served on making the application strong and getting it in sooner. I'm just not sure a 10-20 point increase will really make a difference in your decision with a current score of 670. I think you need to weigh the cost of delaying your application against the possibility of increasing your score.

Good luck,
Lisa
