This is how I would eliminate based on the pronoun It

A - ruled out as there is no pronoun to qualify the noun 'mass' or the subject 'star'.
B - "depending on its mass, a star will compress" - this is wrong, the noun should be the antecedent to the pronoun
C - Same reason as B
D - Correct
E - Even though the pronoun 'it' is used properly - it is used for the wrong subject "mass of the star".
