Are Online Degrees Respected?

by clinter04 » Wed Dec 17, 2008 6:47 pm
I am studying for the GMAT and have been bombarded with schools and admissions. I have been searching tirelessly for an answer to whether I should do an online program or a brick-and-mortar location. Can you please help me with deciding whether to do an online degree or physical location program? I have been told that online programs don’t receive respect and are a waste of time. What is the truth? THANKS!

Dear clinter04,

It depends. Most brick-and-mortar MBA programs that have been around awhile as well as traditional MBA recruiters definitely feel strongly about online programs being worthless. The reason for this is the value in the classroom discussion, teamwork, and networking aspects to a brick-and-mortar that you do not have in an online program. I would have to say in my experience, these are as important to the MBA experience as the actual knowledge you gain. A MBA is a professional degree, not an academic degree; yes, there is a significant academic component, but business school is supposed to be a training ground for future business leaders and as such should provide the students with teamwork and leadership experiences. Likewise, there is a strong value to you in the network of peers you gain in business school as you progress in your career.

Having stated that though, I do know that there are a few industries and specific roles in some industries where online programs are acceptable. These industries are just more of the exception than the rule.

Hope that helps,
Lisa

Lisa,

Thank you so much! That helps so very much! I was under the influence that I should not do an online degree and you confirmed my decision. I really appreciate your help and advice!
