Am I just not cut for the GMAT???

by emmak82 » Sun Nov 23, 2008 4:41 am
Hi,
I'm scheduled to take the GMAT Dec 3rd, 2008, and I'm NOT feeling good about it (never thought it would be this hard).
I'm usually pretty good at studying and graduated with a 3.8, but the GMAT just seem to beat me!!
I downloaded the GMAT practice test from mba.com and been taking it twice. First time I got a score of 460 (Q:25 V:29) and the secon time 380 (Q:19 V:23)... it is horrible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(I am studying with the "Official GMAT Review" book).

I need a 580-600 to get into the school, is this impossible????
Would truly appreciate any help or advice I can get!!!

Thanks!!!

  :?

You still have almost 10days to go. Do not really become so nervous and come to conclusions that test is difficult.

Looking at your scores what i feel is, it is not that diff to reach your set target score if you take mock tests periodically and consistently work on weaker areas after figuring out them from each of the cat tests taken.

You can take free practice tests offered by princeton review, kaplan, 800score.com, testmagic.com and so on.

Firstly what i suggest for the next mocktest you take, is to maintain accuracy atleast for first 13/14 Qs in each of the sections and do not leave any question unattempted(complete the test). This should show improvement in score.

Let me know your score improvement to suggest u more.

All the best,

This is a proof that your GMAT score is independant to your GPA. May I ask how long you have been studying for?

The first time I took the GMAT 2 years ago, I had never heard about this test and did not prepare at all for it... I failed like you would not believe it and I got my lesson. Of course, like most of you, I had a high GPA when I was a student, but let me tell you that your GPA has nothing to do with your future GMAT score.

You are more likely to get a high score if you remember your High School math and verbal theories. I graduated HS 15 years ago, so let me tell you I do not remember a lot of these theories.

With a score like this, you should start by reviewing the bacis theories and concepts. When you feel more confident, then you can attack the OG.

Food for thought.

Cheers!

I feel the same way

I had a great undergrad GPA, I did a masters from a great university, I took a Manhattan GMAT course and I've been studying hard for several months.

I have taken 3 CAT exams and I can't believe that I have never scored above a 580. I don't want to blame the MGMAT course, but I think it just wasn't suited to me learning style. It seems to have served others well, but it has made absolutely NO positive impact on my scores. I did the same when I was studying on my own. I don't know what to do, but study harder.

I work really hard and I think I need a GMAT psychologist or something.

Where is a good place to review the basic theories and concepts?

our manhattangmat strategy guides review the basic material you'll have to master to do well on the test. in fact, they are probably better labeled as "content guides" than as "strategy guides", since that's largely what they are: guides that review the basic content you'll have to know.

they're also separated into subject areas, such as geometry, number properties, and so on, so that you can concentrate on those subject areas individually.

if you're already taken our course, then you already have those books; if you have the old editions from a previous course, then you can swap them for the updated version (released last month) at any of our mgmat centers.

Does anyone have any suggestions for someone like me? Has anyone else taken a course and still come away unsuccessful? Let me know what you guys think.

I agree, the most important thing is to relearn basic concepts from HS. I was the same way... I started studying in July, my 1st score from PR a 380, and my 2nd a 420. I joined a 9 wk PR course, which didn't do me any good b/c I didn't understand the basic concepts. These types of courses are probably more beneficial for those who understand basic Q concepts as they mainly teach shortcuts and tricks. I was still scoring around the same throughout the course...

What I did was relearn basic HS math. There is this site on YouTube called the khanacademy - https://www.youtube.com/user/khanacademy -, that was VERY helpful to me. You can click on "see all playlists", and start with Algebra. After about 2 wks of relearning basic algebra (by this time my PR course was over), I took a practice exam from GMATprep and scored a 500. So, I was doing better but then I needed to learn GMAT concepts, so I started with the OG, from question #1. Practiced, studied, practiced (meaning really understand what you did wrong even if it takes you all night! sometimes it would take like 30 mins to get it!) for a week, and scored 520, another 2 weeks 580. You can see a trend, and now I'm at 620 on MGMAT. I will take 6 more practice exams from MGMAT and Prep and study from OG until I take the actual, which will be on 12/27. I hope to score around a 650ish, and I'm confident I will!

Hope this helps! Happy studying  !

So how did you do?

I am in a very similar situation (by in large due to my ADHD) but I wanted to see how everything turned out? If it went well, any studying tips? I also took MGMAT, I thought they were a great course but with some concepts they just didnt start at the basics which I need, consequentely the class just kinda flew right by me.
