760 on the GMAT, good GPA, what to do?

Hello!

I took the GMAT on Tuesday and got a 760.. the only real studying I did was the two practice tests that come with the PowerPrep software. I will be getting my BS in Mathematics with a minor in Economics in May from a NY State school. I have about a 3.8 GPA.

I am interested in financial mathematics, and I have read up on several of the top programs. I don't have any relevant internships or very many finance classes (just financial accounting and intro. to corporate finance). I do, however, have all of the relevant math courses and more along with econometrics.

Does anyone have any knowledge on the competitiveness of the top programs? I was considering applying to Columbia, University of Michigan, Carnegie Mellon, Rutgers, Georgia Tech, and a few state universities in NC as safeties. I just don't want to waste hundreds of dollars in application fees if I have little to no chance of getting in.

Your numbers certainly qualify you for the programs you listed, but I'm assuming you don't have work experience if you're still working on your BS. If so, a few things to keep in mind:

1) First, before getting into it, why do you think an MBA is right for you at this point in your career? Most students prefer to get a few years of work experience first, as it helps maximize the value of the business education.

2) Schools are making a push to have younger students. That said, straight out of school is tricky. Some schools have programs and application processes set up specifically for students coming directly from undergrad - check out school websites to see.

3) You don't need to go to b-school with a Finance background. You can obviously speak towards your math passion, but you could potentially show your Financial passion via other means. For example, have you been involved in any clubs? Do you have a hobby of creating trade simulations or applying your math passion towards the market in some other way? You need a compelling, focussed story - but not everyone at school has a Finance background.

haha, clearly you wanted a pat on the back when you mentioned that your only preparation method was the two practice tests, however I don't think this factors into your application. Anyway, the stats look good, give it a shot.

Here is my friend's case:
My friend had finished 2 degrees (math & ECON) in 3.5 years with GPA 4.0.
His GMAT score is 780. He finally went to Duke with disappointment.
He graduated from the University of Mississippi.
