Alternative Transcripts

Hello-

I am interested in applying for my MBA with in the next year or so. I wanted to give myself some time to build an alternative transcript, study and take the GMAT, etc.

I graduated from Virginia Tech in 2005 with a double major in Finance and Political Science. My overall GPA was 2.56 with no real trend upward. Since graduation I have been working in a finance/accounting role (first as an Assistant Controller for a hospitality company for 2 years and currently as an Accountant for a telecommunications company).

I would like to build an alternative transcript but am wondering what classes would be the best to take. Since I graduated with a quantitative degree and have professional work experience in accounting I want to take the classes that would benefit me best in obtaining an MBA as well as preparing for the GMAT.

Dear MBAbound,

Great question! I think math courses are the best preparation for both business school and the GMAT. Finance professors also feel math courses are the best preparation as you need to have a strong grasp of algebra and calculus prior to taking your core finance courses. Thus I would suggest taking finite math, college algebra and/or calculus. Statistics is also a good choice, but I'm a big believer in taking math courses based on my experience.
