How should I study for the GMAT exam?

I'm going to start studying for the GMAT exam soon.

I'm thinking about buying Kaplan GMAT 2009 with CD, but I just found that it has received bad and good reviews.

Should I still buy it?
I'm planning to buy Official Guide for GMAT Review in addition to that.


Also, I'm not a native English speaker.
What should I do about GMAT vocaburaries. Are they hard?

Congrats on getting your prep started soon! It's always good to define a set study period and set goals for yourself, to stick with it and aim for a particular date if possible.

I will comment that with the Kaplan 09 book, you can now do your CATs online instead of with the CDROM, which means you'll have access to the most up-to-date scoring algorithms...so as long as you do the online CATs, I would recommend the book.

The Official Guide is a very valuable resource as well.

The GMAT does not directly test vocabulary, as the verbal section tests grammar, reading comprehension, and logical thinking/analysis. But of course, if you are not a native English speaker, it can be helpful to spend some time reading in English and brushing up on your grammar and vocab along the way as you study, to ensure you don't have any challenges on test day. I often encourage students to spend time reading anything in English frequently, in addition to GMAT practice in English....that improves their reading speed, vocab, grammar, and comprehension, all in one.
