Profile evaluation please

by sikoeffect » Sun Dec 07, 2008 11:15 pm
Hi.

I was just wondering if you could provide some feedback on my profile.

I am second generation Hispanic who graduated from UC Berkeley with a 3.6 GPA as a double major in Economics and History, and received High Honors in both majors.

I took the GMAT twice, scoring a 570 on the first try, and a 630 on the second one.

By the time I apply, I will have four years of marketing experience in the movie industry under my belt. I have also been promoted twice, and have helped clients formulate full marketing campaigns for a few smaller Hollywood films.

I have volunteered for the past 2 years at my former high school, working with kids.

My hope is to get into a top 10 program, but more realistically, a top 20 program. I know my GMAT score is somewhat on the lower side, but do you think the rest of my experience will be enough to counter-balance it?

Thank you so much.

Dear sikoeffect,

I agree that your GMAT is on the low side for the top 20. Depending on the school, you might be in the bottom of its mid-80% range which puts you in a better position than being outside it. You appear to have a successful track record in your career and a strong GPA, so I think you should still consider applying to a school that is a good match for you. It is imperative you present a strong rationale for why you want a MBA, how it fits into your overall career plan, and why the school you are applying to is a good choice for your goals. Likewise, you must distinguish yourself from the competition and demonstrate successful leadership experiences/evidence of leadership potential.

If you feel you might be able to raise your GMAT, you might consider taking it a third time. If you could break 650, it would make you more competitive for a top 20 program.

Best of luck,
Lisa

Thanks so much for the feedback Lisa.

I think I could probably raise my score another 30 or 40 points, but initially felt that I should be fine as long as I accentuate every other part of my application.

I guess I gotta do some thinking.

Thanks a lot.
