GMAT 760 : Please help in Profile evaluation

by sk1 » Tue Oct 04, 2011 4:06 am
My Profile :

Worked in Oracle - 3.5 years
Engg from Birla Institute of Technology , Mesra . Major : Electronics and Communication. Percentage : 81.8%
Std 12 : 85.8%
Std 10 : 92.3 %
Decent extra curricular activities
Gmat score : 760

Preference in college : Looking for general management or consulting specialization.
Good college where I can get some decent scholarship.

Have been advised to apply for Kellogg, Duke , Tuck and Columbia..any idea about what the chances of getting in are with the above profile ? I think these are top B schools and my exp might not be enough ! Are there some other colleges I can look into ?

Also how are the Asian colleges for these streams ?

Almost any B-school will provide a general management and/or consulting curriculum. In fact the MBA in itself is a general management education (until you specialize in another stream).

You have a good GMAT score, but you are right in saying that all these 4 schools are very competitive. You would probably have a decent chance at Duke (and perhaps even the others) depending on the add-ons to your IT experience. Either way, do apply to some more lower ranked schools to be on the safe side.

Yes, as said Asian schools will also give you sufficient inputs for these streams. For consulting specialization, I assume you mean that you would aim for a job at top firms. That would depend on the strength of the school brand & whether the top firms recruit at your campus.

Good Luck!

For Asian Colleges you could look at CIEBS , HKUST & Peking University in China.
Hitotsubashi in Japan. These will be safe with ur profile.. (i think)

Hi sk1,

You have a decent profile. Even though you belong to the most competitive IT pool, your GMAT of 760 with a brand name of BIT and Oracle offsets it.

Coming to your target schools, Kellogg is bit of stretch but Duke is achievable. But whether you will land up in a career of your choice in location of your preference, depends a lot on your career goals. Can you elaborate a little on your career goals? It is ok if you seek a career in general management or consulting but you have to be a little more specific in defining your role and industry. There is a specialization in operations or strategy if you mean that, because there is no specialization in consulting.

Feel free to call us if you need to discuss regarding narrowing down your career goals. This brainstorming is part of our Application Review process anyway.

I actually think you have great numbers (760 & 81.8%) and a great undergraduate institution (BIT). Those are some excellent schools but some of them like Columbia and Kellogg do not offer financial aid without a co-signer so that might influence your decision. Schools with no-cosigner loan programs include: Chicago Booth, Darden, Fuqua, HBS, MIT Sloan, NYU Stern, Stanford GSB, Tuck, Wharton and Yale. Schools that do not have co-signer loan programs include: Columbia, Cornell and Kellogg.

Hello ,

Thanks for your replies. I have interest in the field of data analytics and i would like to be a consultant or product manager in this field working across different industries. At Oracle I have worked in the core hr domain as a developer of an application that uses data analytics. I now want to be able to broaden my perspective and apply the knowledge I have gained across different domains.

As far as the loan bit goes..I do have a co-signer in India. Or is it that I would need one in the US to be able to get a loan ?

For schools without co-signer programs, you would need a co-signer in the U.S. That is why many applicants first filter schools by those with co-signer programs.
