Officials at the United States Mint believe that Sacagawea dollar coin will be used more as a substitute for four quarters rather than for the dollar bil because its weight,only 8.1 grams,is far less than four quarters,which weigh 5.67 grams each.

A)same
B)more as a substitute for four quarters than the dollar bil because it weighs only 8.1 grams,far lighter than
C)as a substitute for four quarters more than for the dollar bill because it weighs only 8.1 grams,far less than
D)as a substitute for four quarters more than the dollar bill because its weight of only 8.1 grams is far lighter than it is for
E)as a substitute more for four quarters rather than for the dollar bill because its weight ,only 8.1 grams,is far less than it is for

IMO-C

A)
lacks parallelism and is unidiomatic (more for X rather than for Y is incorrect). The correct comparison is more for X than for Y.

B)
absence of "for" makes it unclear and ambiguous.

D)
Ambiguous and wordy

E)unidiomatic

In C, the statement implies that the Sacajawea coin is far less than 4 quarters.

Also, I'm not sure as to why B is wrong. Could you shed more light on this?

Hi Domnu , B is wrong because "more" is modifying "substitute" which is wrong here because we do not have any other action here (to be compared to susbtitute)
Instead , we need to associate "more" with "quarters" and "dollar bills".

More...rather than...incorrect idiom.

Incorrect comparison....more for X than bill...
for required before bill....or if we think that more as x....than "as" Y.

C)as a substitute for four quarters more than for the dollar bill because it weighs only 8.1 grams,far less than
Correct

D)as a substitute for four quarters more than the dollar bill because its weight of only 8.1 grams is far lighter than it is for

as/for required before bill. Also there is no/ambiguous noun referent for it.since previous its refers to coin.

E)as a substitute more for four quarters rather than for the dollar bill because its weight ,only 8.1 grams,is far less than it is for

Is option E wrong in construction of the second clause

E says

its weight, only 8.1 grams, is far less than it is for four quarters

I feel this construction is wrong and the correct version would be

its weight, only 8.1 grams, is far less than that for four quarters

Instructors , please comment

C is the best choice.

A,D,E - incorrect - violating parallelism - it should be "weighs" and not "weights"

B - incorrect - incorrectly comparing "as a substitute" with "four quarters"
