OG13 PS Q95 : What is value of y ?

by gmatstud » Wed Jul 04, 2012 5:13 am
When positive integer x is divided by positive integer y, the remainder is 9. If , what is the value of y ?
(A) 96 (B) 75 (C) 48 (D) 25 (E) 12

I quite did not understand the explanation:

I'm not posting the same for now. Just wanted to know if there is a different approach to tackle this problem

Hi gmatstud:

You didn`t post the complete problem. You are missing. If x/y=96.12, what is y?

Anyways, here's how I did it.

If x/y =96.12, the remainder is 0.12*y. For example, if we divide 5 by 2, 5/2 = 2.5, the remainder is 0.5*2=1. In the same way if 15 is divided by 4, 15/4=3.75; The remainder is 0.75*4=3. So the remainder is always fractional part * denominator.
So in this case remainder = 0.12*y.

We are told that remainder is 9.
so 0.12*y=9 => y=9/0.12 = 9*100/12 = 75.

Alternate way:

fractional part = 0.12 = 12/100 = 3/25. Since remainder is 9, we need 9 at the top of this fraction. Multiply and divide 3/25 by 3, we get 3/25 = 9/75. Hence y=75.

Let me know if this helps :)

When one positive integer is divided by another, we typically represent what's left over either as a REMAINDER or as a DECIMAL.
There is a relationship between the two representations:

Remainder/Divisor = Decimal.

When 5 is divided by 2:
Remainder representation: 5/2 = 2 R1.
Decimal representations: 5/2 = 2.5.
Remainder/Divisor = 1/2.
Decimal = .5.
Since the two values are equal:
Remainder/divisor = decimal.

It can be helpful to write the decimal representation AS A FRACTION IN ITS MOST REDUCED FORM.

In the problem above:
Remainder = 9.
Divisor = y.
Decimal = .12 = 12/100 = 3/25.
Plugging these values into remainder/divisor = decimal, we get:
9/y = 3/25
y = 75.

The correct answer is B.
