(A) and (E) are close as the others have passive/awkward construction.

I prefer (E) over (A).

Can you explain your reson behind the pick. I guess we all narrowed it down to E and A, and for me, A seeemed too wordy and using gerunds(becoming)is always not advisable at best on GMAT. That was the reason I choose E. But I would liek to know what made you pick A, may be there is some hidden reasoning I missed to consider.

Is the undeerlined portion correct? Seems like something is missing from the sentence. Some choices such as E, "must be abandoned because the river has become" has become in the corrected choice. But A doesn't have "becoming" in the corrcted choice?. Did you post the chioces properly?

IMO A (even though I do like E because it's concise).

My reasoning - I think there's a difference between "as a result of" and "because" in this statement.

What's the OA?

I don't think A could be correct. One it is awkward and a gerund is used without a possessive. 'river becoming ' is not correct. If we were to use this, it should be 'river's becoming'. Either way 'becoming' is very awkward and E is much more concise.
