xy = -16 implies one of either x or y should be negative and the other one should be positive.
Case 1: x = negative, y = positive implies it passes through the 2nd quadrant.
Case 2: x = positive, y = negative implies it passes through the 4th quadrant.

Hence, the correct answer is D.
