1.xy=24
2.x-y=5
(1) xy = 24
If x = 6, y = 4; here y > 0
If x = -6, y = -4; here y < 0
We don't get a unique answer.
So, (1) is NOT SUFFICIENT.

(2) x - y = 5
If x = 1, y = -4; y < 0
If x = 6, and y = 1; y > 0
We don't get a unique answer.
So, (2) is NOT SUFFICIENT.

Combining (1) & (2), xy = 24 and x - y = 5 implies (5 + y)y = 24 or y^2 + 5y - 24 = 0 or (y + 8)(y - 3) = 0 or y = -8, 3
Again we don't get a unique value for y. So, NOT SUFFICIENT.

The correct answer is
(E)
.
