,which vs ing-modifers with a comma

by debrupishere » Tue Mar 05, 2013 9:28 am
Hello ,
Can somebody explain to me when to use a ",which" modifier and a ",ing-modifier" ; both the modifiers modify the clause before it , providing additional information . However the ",ing-modifier" can also give the result of the clause that it is modifying .
Thanks
Debrup

1: COMMA + verb-ing modifier---> modifies the preceding clause.
Example: The engineer identified the problem, using the latest technology.

2: COMMA + which -->

Example : Hailed as a key discovery in the science of evolution, the fossils of a large scaly creature, which resembles both a fish and a land-animal, provide evidence of a possible link in the evolutionary chain from water-based to land-based organisms.
Which refers to the creature(noun)

Modifiers starting with 'which' attach themselves to the noun immediately preceding the comma. So here, 'which' refer to the creature.
