Guessing Strategies

by ottvdiesel » Sat May 19, 2012 8:10 am
Hello all,

I am new to the forum and am currently on Day 7 of the 60-Day GMAT Study Guide. In the Study Guide daily email, it says to "practice your guessing as you go through problems", and I was wondering if someone could please clarify/elaborate this further? Am I supposed to be using the "Kaplan Guessing Strategies"? Please help. Thanks in advance!

Hi Sean,

Good question.
I'm not really referring to any specific guessing strategies when I say to practice your guessing.
Sometimes, when students encounter a question they can't answer, they automatically check the answer/explanation in the OG. When they do this, they miss out on the opportunity to check the answer choices and see if they can eliminate some answer choices and identify which answer choice seems most likely to be right. This, of course, is highly subjective, but it's important to practice what you'll do on test day if you can't answer a question.
Remember that the computer adaptive nature of the GMAT pretty much ensures that you be forced to guess on many questions, so it's good to practice.

Cheers,
Brent

Great, thanks Brent for the reply! By the way, thank you for the 60-day Study Guide as I do find it very helpful. I didn't do too well (a score of 410) on the first GMAT prep test #1 and my goal is to get at least 550. I'm hoping this is achievable within a two-month period!

I'm sure you'll get there - all the best!
