the practice of drinking lead water is a health hazard. modern americans are in the present. 'do' in other choices is incorrect because the focus is on the fact that it was a 'hazard' and still is a 'hazard'.

we are saying A was bad for ancient X as it (A) is (bad) for modern Y. A continues to be bad at present. this is evident by the use of "modern". it requires a present"is"

Thanks all. I understood parallelism and present tense part. But, still I haven't got the answer for "Why not B?"

"As that for " in this context is missing a pronoun for indicating 'as what for Americans' .. there has to be a pronoun to indicate the 'what' and choice E has the 'it' to indicate the lead in drinking water.

I was able to reduce the sentence to

A was X for Y as THAT for Z.

But I am not able to understand what does "that" refer??

Can u pls elaborate on "As vs Like. we need 'as' ". Is it coz u need 'as' to refer to the
independent clause "ingesting lead in drinking water was a significant health hazard"

And 'as' is used to refer to clauses Vs 'like', which is used to refer to objects/nouns

Issues with B

When we have to exactly refer the same antecedent -"ingesting lead in drinking water" in this case, usage of personal pronouns such as "It", "they" is preferred for demonstrative pronouns such as "That, those, these, this"

At first, it may sound greek but try to learn more on demonstrative pronouns and check if "that " still makes sense

This is my take. May be some one has a crisp solution

Yeap. Clauses.

So answer of "why not B?" is:

1. It misses a verb
2. Use of demonstrative pronoun is wrong.
