As an experienced labor organizer and the former head of one of the nation's
most powerful labor unions, Grayson is an excellent choice to chair the new
council on business-labor relations.
Which of the following, if true, would most strengthen the conclusion above?
(A) The new council must have the support of the nation's labor leaders if it is to
succeed.
(B) During his years as a labor leader, Grayson established a record of good
relations with business leaders.
(C) The chair of the new council must be a person who can communicate directly
with the leaders of the nation's largest labor unions.
(D) Most of the other members of the new council will be representatives of
business management interests.
(E) An understanding of the needs and problems of labor is the only qualification
necessary for the job of chairing the new council.

I believe the answer is E.

From the question itself, we know that:
- Grayson is an experienced labor organizer
- Grayson was the former head of a powerful labor union

We need an answer that would make one (or both) of these two facts lead logically to his choice as the new council on business-labor relations.

Choice A: Out of context, we're not discussing the other labor leaders
Choice B: Establishing good relations with business leaders does not necessarily make you good for the new council, as it does not talk about the "labor relations" part of the conclusion
Choice C: The opposite of B (in a way), discusses the labor side but not the "business relations"
Choice D: Out of context, does not mean he'll be a good leader or how he will support the labor side
Choice E: If understanding the labor side is the only thing needed for the job, then this is the exact experience Grayson has, and therefore this should be the answer.

Hi dimochka,

Thanks for your reply to the question.

You are saying that an answer that would make one (or both) of these two facts lead logically to his choice as the new council on business-labor relations.

Now B and C both are stating one fact of what we want in our conclusion. Just becoz E is stating both of them in indirect manner that's why its the answer.

The reason E is the answer, is because the statement fully connects the premises to the conclusion. We are given that Greyson has experience with unions, and we're looking for the bridge between "experience with unions" and "good choice for council leader".

B and C could both support the conclusion, but they're omitting information. If you take them, it isn't making it more likely that he's a good leader, because we're missing information that would make it certain. E is definitive - if that's the only qualification necessary, then regardless of any other facts or information we have, he would be a good choice. If you have to supplement a choice with additional information or if the choice supports only a portion of the conclusion, it's likely that it's not the best choice. Remember that, while there may be a few answers, you always want to pick the best one.
