6 days left for GMAT need your advice.

by arinb » Mon Mar 25, 2013 9:42 pm
Hi All,
I am not getting a clear picture about how good my preparation for GMAT is. I have now only 6 days left for the D-day. About 10 days back, I gave my GMAT Prep1 and ended up with a disastrous score of 590(48Q,24V)!! Worst part was I failed miserably with the time management. For the sake of finishing the exam I did a random guesses of the questions towards the end (about 12 questions in each sections). A couple of days later, I gave the same exam again with proper time-management and I finished everything on time not putting additional time on the tougher ones. But again I finished with 590(48Q,23V). I was bit down.
About 5 days back I gave the free test from Veritas, and my score was 610(46Q,28V)!! Thought of not giving the Manhatten free test, because most people are of the opinion that its very tough. Finally gathered courage and gave it couple of days back. My score was 630(44Q,33V)!! I am yet to give GMAT Prep2 and the free test from Platinum Gmat. But, I am not sure about how good I am prepared. My target score is somewhere around 650. I have only 6 days left.
Can you please suggest what all areas I must focus in these 6 days. Also, can you please suggest if my above scores indicate whether I will be able to achieve my target score.
I am badly in need of your valuable advice/suggestions.

#1 There a many things you can study in the remaining days, so it really depends on what areas you are struggling. It looks like verbal is relatively poor, so I would spend a majority of your time there with an emphasis on SC because it is the biggest portion of the section.

Unfortunately, you scores indicate that your target score is unlikely on exam day. Not that you can't do it, but in order to expect a certain score you should have several practice exams above that target.

Hey arinb - we saw your post in the GMAC forum too and though EssaySnark is definitely no GMAT expert (!!) what occurred to us in reading it was that it seems like you're trying to cram, and that might be the issue. Learning difficult subjects like the GMAT often takes time - not just literal hours spent studying, but an extended application over time.

Unfortunately we'd agree with Jim that it doesn't seem likely you'll be able to get a big improvement in the amount of time you've got left. :-( You may want to take a step back and evaluate if this is the best time to take the test, or whether you can rearrange the plan to allow yourself more space to work with the material and make sure you've really 'got' it, and then try the test a few weeks from now.

The fact that you've done these practice tests and are making progress is great - just remember to also celebrate your wins. Sometimes people work themselves into a tizzy around poor performance and the stress of that actually contributes to more poor performance - it becomes a habit. You're showing improvement which is awesome (remember too that most people do better on the practice tests than the real thing).

Good luck with the test, whenever you decide to take it!! Let us know how you do.
