Like the world of motor sports, the designers of racing sailboats often push the envelope too far in a quest to minimize weight, producing craft that are fragile and unsuited to the rigors of offshore racing.
  • A. Like the world of motor sports
    B. Just like in the world of motor sports
    C. Like their counterparts in the world of motor sports
    D. Just as the engineers in the world of motor sports
    E. Much as designers of motor sports.

We've got to be able to compare these sailboat-designers logically, and it definitely wouldn't be fair to compare them to a "world" (of motor sports) or to "in the world"... so (A) and (B) are out of the question right away.

It gets trickier among C, D, and E, but here's a test we can run. Would it be totally legitimate for me to say...
(C-related) "Designers of racing sailboats are like their counterparts in the world of motor sports"?
(D-related) "Designers of racing sailboats are just as the engineers in the world of motor sports"?
(E-related) "Designers of racing sailboats are much as designers of motor sports"?

Only one of those questions gets a yes (the first one), so C is the only answer that will work here!
