Hi,
Endocrinology dates back to the nineteenth century, ...
The part after comma should describe the period of 19th century. So, only D,E can be used.
I think 'when' is used doe a specific point of time rather than a period of time. So, I think D is better.
Hence, D

IMO E

I think in D the times and when are redundant. Experts help appreciated.

In the answer choice D, the times is redundant with the nineteenth century.

You would consider:
dates back to the nineteenth century, when
or
dates back to the times when

(The usage of the times in the later, however, is not formal. I think one uses the times, when one is not sure about time period or talks about things such as memories)

c. falling employment rates triggered by a drop in investment, causing cutbacks in consumer spending and starting a cycle of layoffs that lead to even lower employment rates.
is the correct choice.
This time no looking back!!!
