1000CR Question No 12 : Test 20

12. An advertisement designed to convince readers of the great durability of automobiles manufactured by the Deluxe Motor Car Company cites as evidence the fact that over half of all automobiles built by the company since 1970 are still on the road today, compared to no more than a third for any other manufacturer.
Which of the following, if true, most strongly supports the advertisement's argument?
(A) After taking inflation into account, a new Deluxe automobile costs only slightly more than a new model did in 1970.
(B) The number of automobiles built by Deluxe each year has not increased sharply since 1970.
(C) Owners of Deluxe automobiles typically keep their cars well maintained.
(D) Since 1970, Deluxe has made fewer changes in the automobiles it manufactures than other car companies have made in their automobiles.
(E) Deluxe automobiles have been selling at relatively stable prices in recent years.

IMO D is the right ans. But the source I refer says B is the right choice.I'm not sure I've figured out why. Please help.

Good que but in Wrong forum.
Neways, The Ans should be B and here is why:

Conclusion:Delux Motor car automobiles are one of the most durable cars.
Supporting premise: Max number of cars built since 1970 are on Road as of today.

Q) Support the conclusion that Delux Motor car automobiles are durable?

(A) After taking inflation into account, a new Deluxe automobile costs only slightly more than a new model did in 1970.
Out of Scope: concern is no where related to price

(B) The number of automobiles built by Deluxe each year has not increased sharply since 1970.
Correct, as supporting premise shows the number of cars since 1970 as evidence, this statement says that there wasn't any growth sharply and hence strengthen the evidence of number of cars.

(C) Owners of Deluxe automobiles typically keep their cars well maintained.
Weaken: This rejects the argument

(D) Since 1970, Deluxe has made fewer changes in the automobiles it manufactures than other car companies have made in their automobiles.
This actually weakens the conclusion by citing that fewer changes in automobiles were reason for durabality and discredit the supporting premise facts.. Remember we have to strengthen the advertiser's argument not reject anything what he says.

(E) Deluxe automobiles have been selling at relatively stable prices in recent years.
Out of Scope: concern is no where related to price

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the reply, But I'm not sure I've understood why D is weakening the argument. The way I has interpreted is--> The fact that Deluxe has made fewer changes shows that its structure was more durable & hence needed fewer modifications.

Please help me understanding the flaw in this reasoning.

+1 for D

Conclusion: Car is more durable

Strengthened by the fact that not much changes were needed in car as compared to competitors

Gotcha why you are having this doubt!!
Lets look at what is question asking you to do: "Which of the following if true, most strongly supports the advertisement's argument?"

You have to support the whole argument of advertiser and not just its conclusion.

Q)Whats does whole advertiser argument means?
A)Whole argument means CONCLUSION + PREMISE

so here:
Advertiser itself sites an evidence that half of all automobiles built by the company since 1970 are still on the road today.
And by using this evidence he , therefore, conveys his automobiles are durable.

D strengths the conclusion Only that yes Automobiles are durable by giving the alternative reason of fewer changes. But at the same time rejects the evidence of advertiser. And hence makes the whole argument weakens.

Hope its clear now!
feel free to bounce back.
