In a survey of 100 families the no. that read recent issues of a certain monthly magazine were found to be;
September only 18
September but not August 23
September & July 8
September 26
July 48
July & August 8
None of the 3 months 24.
With the help of the set theory find;
(a)How many read the August issue?
(b)How many read 2 consecutive issues?
(c)How many read the July issue if and only if they did not read the August issue?
(d)How many read September & August issues but did not read the July issue?
There it is am looking forward to your response.

Could you please illustrate the ways that you got these answers...

Hi, check the Venn digram that I have uploaded. We can directly interpret some values from the given content. Some other values can be interpreted with a small calculation.
(a) How many read the August issue?
Answer = 10+3+5 = 18
(b)How many read 2 consecutive issues?
Answer = (only-2 consecutive) + (3-consecutive)
= (July & Aug) + (Aug & Sep) + (Jul & Aug & Sep)
= 5+0+3 = 8
(c)How many read the July issue if and only if they did not read the August issue?
Answer = July but not Aug
= (Only-July) + (July & Sep)
= 35+5 = 40
(d)How many read September & August issues but did not read the July issue?
Answer = "Sep & Aug" but not Jul
= 0

I think I am clear here,
All the best

September only = b = 18
September but not August = b+d = 23 (I guess the statement is little ambiguous.look at the Venn diagram)
September and July = d+g =8
September = b+d+g+f = 26
July = a+d+g+e = 48
July and August = e+g =8
none of the three = 24
total = 100
a+b+c+d+e+f+g = 100-24 = 76

b+d = 23
b= 18
d= 23-18 = 5;
d+g = 8
d= 5
g= 8-5=3;

b+d+g+f= 26
b+d+g = 26
f=0;
a+d+g+e = 48
e+g = 8 & d= 5
a=48-13=35;
e+g = 8
g=3
e=8-3=5;
a+b+c+d+e+f+g = 76
c=76-a-b-d-e-f-g
c=76-35-18-5-5-0-3=10;
(a)How many read the August issue?
[/quote
August = c+e+g+f = 18
(b)How many read 2 consecutive issues?
= e+g+f = 8
(c)How many read the July issue if and only if they did not read the August issue?
= a+d =40
(d)How many read September & August issues but did not read the July issue?
=f = 0

Quote:
(b)How many read 2 consecutive issues?

e+g+f = 8

In this answer, shouldnt we eliminate g. The question is only about people who read issues of July-August and August-September. But g includes even July-september.

As per my calculation, the answer to b) is 5.

Is that correct.

According to the basic Sets theory, whatever you have done is correct...

All the answers should be correct...

I tried the question and got the same values.

Vookeh dyzynah please post the OA...asap

Satish, it is asked for the count of people who read two consecutive editions, which also includes the people who read three consecutive editions as well. Had it been asked for the count of people who read two consecutive editions only, the answer would have been 5 (5+0). This is my logic. But let us know what the Official answer is saying? Amit.trivedi, what's the official answer for this?
