by mba.palak » Tue Jun 14, 2011 2:06 am
Is x > y ?

(1) ax > ay
(2) a*a*x > a*a*y
A Statement (1) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (2) alone is not sufficient.
B Statement (2) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (1) alone is not sufficient.
C BOTH statements TOGETHER are sufficient, but NEITHER statement ALONE is sufficient.
D EACH statement ALONE is sufficient.
E Statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER are NOT sufficient.

The OE is B

Statement 1: ax > ay
If a > 0, x > y
If a < 0, x < y

Not sufficient

Statement 2: a²x > a²y
From this we have a ≠ 0 and as a² is always positive, we can cancel a² from both side. Hence, x > y

Sufficient

The correct answer is B.
