no of members

by Chaitanya_1986 » Thu May 12, 2011 8:38 pm
All of the members of club Y are either Democrats or Republicans. If 21of the male members and 53of the female members are Democrats, what is the ratio of the number of males to the number of females in the club?
(1) In club Y the number of female members is one less than the number of male members.
(2) In club Y the number of male Republican members is equal to the number of female Democratic members.

let no. of male members=m, female member=f;

democratic male=21; democratic female=53;
republican male=m-21; republican female=f-53;

1) m-f=1; we can not find the answer on the basis of this information; hence 1 alone is not sufficient to answer the question..!!

2) now as per given information; m-21=53; m=74;
as we don't have information about the no. of female republicans therefore 2 alone is also not sufficient to answer the question.

combining 1 and 2;
74-f=1; f=73; therefore required ratio is m/f=74/73 hence answer should be C

There is a miss-type in the original post. The question actually reads:

If 1/2 of the male members and 3/5 of the female members are Democrats....

Therefore the OA B originally listed is correct. We definitely want to be careful when posting questions to make sure that we copy them exactly :)

I hope this clears up the confusion!
