Two jars contain milk and water in the ratio 3 : 1 and 5 : 4 respectively. What volume should be taken out from the first jar if volumes have to be taken out from both the jars so as to fill up a 72 liters jar with milk and water in the ratio 1 :1?

In the first jar, there are 3 liters of milk for every 1 liter of water.
Thus, the fraction of milk in the first jar = 3/4.
In the second jar, there are 5 liters of milk for every 4 liters of water.
Thus, the fraction of milk in the second jar = 5/9.

When the two jars are mixed, the fraction of milk in the resulting mixture must be between 5/9 and 3/4.
But the problem states that the ratio of milk to water in the mixture is 1:1, implying that the fraction of milk in the mixture is 1/2.
Not possible: 1/2 is not between 5/9 and 3/4.

The correct answer is E.
