Sentence Correction Question - help

by ketaki6 » Thu Aug 04, 2011 5:50 pm
Hi,

This is an SC question encountered in the Kaplan-

The Dancing Doll line sold slightly more than $3.5 million worth of toys last year, 40 percent more than the Teeny Tiny Trucks line did and nearly three times as much as the Basic Blocks line's sales.

The choice I thought best among the ones given was -

the Teeny Tiny Trucks line sold and nearly three times as much as Basic Blocks' sales.

The reason I chose this was, that only in this answer is the Dancing Doll line's sales compared with the sales of the other two, rather than the other two.

But the correct answer is - the Teeny Tiny Trucks line and nearly three times more than the Basic Blocks line

Kaplan says this is because of parallelism - Dancing Doll line - Teeny Tiny Trucks line - Basic Blocks line

However, in this case isn't the sales of Dancing Doll being compared with the Teeny Tiny Trucks and Blocks line?

So, I dont understand if we choose parallelism here or actually comparing the sales with the sales?

Hi Ketaki6,

You have posted in Reading comprehension forum.
Also, advice you to always post the full question with all answer choices.

Coming to the question,

The right answer clearly chooses both parallelism and comparison.
The full sentence now is
The Dancing Doll line sold slightly more than $3.5 million worth of toys last year, 40 percent more than the Teeny Tiny Trucks line and nearly three times more than the Basic Blocks line.
The summary of the above sentence is
Dancing doll line did better than TTT line and better than Basic Blocks line.

For your answer to work, it should have been something like:
Dancing doll's sales was better than TTT's sales and Basic Block's sales.

The problem with your answer choice is that TTT sold and BB's sales is not a parallel construction (sort of implied by the wrong comparison). Similarly Dancing doll line and other 2 are not compared in the right way.
Vineesh,
Just telling you what I know and think. I am not the expert. :)

Ya, makes sense. I understand that thought parallelism and consistency would be ideal, the option I chose was not consistent, so it wouldn't qualify at all.

Thanks
