I second that. B is the only choice with the correct idiomatic use of "perceived...to be".

E

"regarded as" is the correct idiom.

E is a clear winner here.

Rule used is MODIFIERS...

"What is regarded as a result of tensions?" The answer is "Sales of the book". Hence E is clear winner.

B is wrong, as novel itsef didnot reach the zenith...it was the sale that reached.

D is wrong cos of same reasons as B.
C is wrong cos of wrong modifier, 1960 is not the result of tensions...

I am not clear how the intended meaning is sales of novel as cause of tensions?

For original stmt, it is clear that analysts regard the tension during cold war as spy novel. Morever, it sounds weird, that analysts would bother about tensions and blame them on sales of the novel.

I think answer should be D.

Ashish I think the intended meaning is that 'the sales were the results of the tension'. And not as you said 'cause' of the tension. (E) brings out that meaning clearly.

Most Americans perceived the USSR as a threat in 1960s not in Cold war.

See the difference between D and E.

How can we conclude that sales of novel can cause tension? Novel can cause tension not its sale.

Please clarify

This question is very strange!!

I always believed that if a couple of choices are okay grammatically or otherwise, then the meaning of choice A precedes over the meaning of the two choices which clash.

However, I guess.. the intended meaning of the choice E is not the same as of choice A.

There is something amiss in this SC...isn't it? please guide...
