Having walked for four hours

by [email protected] » Sat Sep 29, 2012 8:25 pm
Having walked for four hours in temperatures exceeding hundred degrees, the soldiers were as soaked as if having walked through a rainstorm.
(A) as if having walked
(B) as having walked
(C) as if walking
(D) as if they would have walked
(E) as if they had walked

Why D is wrong?

I will go with E as it clearly stated the transition of time and the past form of subjunctive "were". D is not correct as if and would do not go along in same clause.

Experts please correct me if I am wrong here.

On the GMAT, if + subject + would is INCORRECT.
Eliminate D.

Any particular reason for if + subject + would to be incorrect on GMAT? Are there more such rules.
Even I selected D here.
Please help.

In SPEECH, if + subject + would can serve to indicate WILLINGNESS or PREFERENCE:

Case 1: If you would help me...
Meaning: If you were WILLING to help me...

Case 2: If you would like an apple...
Meaning: If you PREFER/WANT an apple...

Neither usage is warranted here.
The likelihood that either usage will be tested on the GMAT is about 0.
For this reason, eliminate any answer choice with if + subject + would.

The OA here employs ELLIPSIS -- the omission of words whose presence is understood -- to convey the following meaning:
The soldiers were as soaked as [they WOULD HAVE BEEN SOAKED] if they HAD WALKED through a rainstorm.
The words in brackets are omitted, but their presence is understood.
