Chromosome damage

by Vemuri » Fri Apr 03, 2009 7:45 pm
Since chromosome damage may be caused by viral infections, medical x-rays, and exposure to sunlight, it is important that the chromosomes of a population to be tested for chemically induced damage be compared with those of a control population.

(A) to be tested for chemically induced damage be compared with
(B) being tested for damage induced chemically are compared with
(C) being tested for chemically induced damage should be compared to
(D) being tested for chemically induced damage are to be compared to
(E) that is to be tested for chemically induced damage are to be comparable with

"it is important that" is a subjunctive of the form "order/request +that" and requires an infinitive form of the verb. so we must retain the "be compared"
so B, C, D and E are out. only A remains.

Compared with should be used as it is between similar things... Chromosomes
So ans should be between A and B

(A) to be tested for chemically induced damage be compared with
<- Bold phrase is better than "damage induced chemically"

(B) being tested for damage induced chemically are compared with

Whts the Oa..??

Initially I picked C, but after reading Scooby's post, I now agree that A is correct. The command subjunctive is definitely triggered by "It is important that..."

Hence, the correct construction should adhere to this pattern:

It is important that + subject + BARE FORM VERB (i.e., in the infinitive without the "to")

B, C, D, and E are not correct command subjunctive constructions, so they can be eliminated. A is correct because it uses "be", which is the bare form of "to be."

I am kicking myself for failing to realize initially that this is a command subjunctive question. For more on the subject, see MGMAT SC, page 135.

A very simple question:

Since chromosome damage may be caused by viral infections, medical x-rays, and exposure to sunlight, it is important that the chromosomes of a population to be tested for chemically induced damage be compared with those of a control population.

(A) to be tested for chemically induced damage be compared with
(B) being tested for damage induced chemically are compared with
(C) being tested for chemically induced damage should be compared to
(D) being tested for chemically induced damage are to be compared to
(E) that is to be tested for chemically induced damage are to be comparable with

First, Correct idiom here is compared with so option C and D are out.
Then, in option E 'are to be comparable with' is obviously wrong.
So now left with A & B.

In option B, 'induced chemically' is modifying damage so it should be before Damage.

So left with option A.

The command subjective rule didn't strike me but managed to land at the correct answer.

My choice A.
