Among the objects found in the excavated temple weresmall terra-cotta effigies left by supplicants who were either asking the goddess Bona Dea's aid in healing physical and mental ills or thanking her for such help.

(A) in healing physical and mental ills or thanking her for such help
(B) in healing physical and mental ills and to thank her for helping
(C) in healing physical and mental ills, and thanking her for helping
(D) to heal physical and mental ills or to thank her for such help
(E) to heal physical and mental ills or thanking her for such help

OA is A. I am confused over the usage of "aid in" and "aid to". In both the usages
aid is noun, but I am not clear about the difference in usage of them.

Here the trick is finding out the correct usage of Idiom - either X or Y , which narrows down the answer choice to A , D & E

To help ( In D and E ) is not correct usage so , we may negate the options D and E and hence A is the answer...

Who is healing - is it whether supplicants or Goddess - This will lead to 'aid in'; hence A should be correct.

Usage of Aid

Aid/help (noun) + in + object


Aid (verb) +infinitive
Help (verb) +infinitive or base verb
Aid/help(verb) +with+object

First, aid here is not used as a noun but as a verb.
Second, aid in doing something is the proper idiom when aid is used as a verb.

Totally wrong. AID here is indeed noun. How else can it be in possessive phrase (bob's aid)?
I found the correct explanation guys........ If AID is verb, No preposition is used.



Aid to can be used when its a subject's action
eg : she provides AID TO victims.

AID IN generally follows possessive nouns plus the verb takes -ing forms

eg : Her AID in walking the dog was appreciated
