known of them.
(A) Martin Luther is the best known of them
(B) the best known is Martin Luther
(C) the better known of them was Martin
Luther
(D) Martin Luther is better known
(E) the best known one was Martin Luther

IMO B,

We need a superlative ( Best) , so only A,B and E qualifies.
A and E are unnecessarily wordy and ambiguous

A - WORDY; Of everyone, A is best OF THEM. Here, OF THEM is unnecessary.
B - OF everyone, the best is A - CORRECT
C - BETTER is WRONG here. Since we're comparing Martin Luther King with all others, BEST should be correct.
D - Same as above. Better - Wrong
E - WAS is wrong. Its still true. Of everyone, A IS best even now

Though I'm confused with "of them" but I think Martin Luther should be the subject.

isnt it said that the modifier must modify the closest noun ?

then why here.. we choose "the best known is martin luther " ?

I know A is wordy ... but if .. "of them " wouldnt have been there.. then would A be right ??

IMO B

Here the best known is Martin Luther is not the modifier but the part of the main sentence:
"Of the people who brought about the Reformation, the best known is Martin Luther"

the religious revolution.... is the modifier modifying Reformation
