This is the cube root of 3. You likely will not have to know the precise value, just a range. It is greater than 1 and less than 1.5, just test numbers to get to this:

1 x 1 x 1 = 1

1.5 x 1.5 x 1.5 = 3.375

I agree with Jim. You'd never need to evaluate 3^(1/3) with any degree of precision. That would require some pretty advanced math (Newton's Method) or a calculator (logarithms).

However, the GMAT might ask something like:

3^(1/3) is between
A) -2 and -1
B) -1 and 0
C) 0 and 1
D) 1 and 2
E) 2 and 3

Answer = D

Cheers,
Brent
