a)Resembling both a lion and
//wrong modifier for ancient Egyptians
b)Building it to resemble both a lion and
//Building and constructed looks redundant in the same sentence
c)Resembling it to both a lion and
// correct : it -> Sphinx
d)Having a resemblance to both a lion and
//wrong modifier for ancient Egyptians
e)Building it to resemble not only a lion and also
//wrong idiom - not only....but also

a)Resembling both a lion and >> This modifier illogically modifies Egyptians.
b)Building it to resemble both a lion and >> Slightly redundant but correct.
c)Resembling it to both a lion and >> 'Resembling it to'? You can't resemble x to y. Idiom is 'X resembles Y'. Incorrect.
d)Having a resemblance to both a lion and >> Says that Egyptians resembled both lion and man.
e)Building it to resemble not only a lion and also >> Incorrect use of idiom. Correct idiom: 'Not only ... but also'.

I am confused between B and D.

In A C D -> 'Resembling'/'resemblance' indicates that the ancient Egyptians were Resembling to something ! Totally wrong. Modifier Error !

We need to modify the ancient Egyptians. So, Between B E -> E is wrong with the construction, it should have been "not only but also".

Hence, the answer is B !

B is the perfect it in here as we need the "it" pronoun to make a logical comparison to Sphinx.

Having - this is a basic modifier issue and hence, is incorrect. It means it was already having a resemblance when the Sphinx was constructed.
