Hello,

I just took my first GMAT today and was devastated by the result. (690: Q50 V33)
I would just not retake it if I got 700, but now I am very concerned if my profile is good enough to apply (and to be admitted)...to my target schools : CMU Tepper, UT Austin, UNC, Duke, USC Marshall, and Purdue.

Please see if, based on my information provided below, you can determine whether I am in a relatively safe zone or a No-No zone for those schools. (should I retake GMAT to be on the safer side?)
Thank you soooo much in advance. I will be looking forward your reply!

Career goals: To become a technology analysis expert. These days, determining whetehr a certain technology will become the next google (or the next new gold-mine) is important. I would like to integrate my science/technology background and skills I learn from MBA to be able to discern the commercial and technical feasibility of the emerging technology. (So I deliberately chose schools with strong engineering background)
I think this is important in Korean economy (I would like to return to Korea after my MBA or after post-MBA job), would like to go back to my company or similar industry to work as an analyst and a manager. But ultimately, I would like to be hired by the government and be a cabinet of advisors or something (am I going too far? maybe I am just dreaming).
I feel that it is hard for a woman to move up the ladder in Korea, unless she has a competitive edge and I would like to learn from MBA to become a powerful woman leader, become a mentor for future women in asian countries.

Background information:

I have graduated with MS(GPA3.7/4.0) and BS(GPA: 3.5/4.0) in applied physics from Purdue.
Work experience of 5 years in the leading semiconductor manufacturing company(in Korea) as a technical marketer.
My role includes communication with customers, project management, roadmap projections, trend analysis, cost-profit analysis and product planning and enabling.

Ethnicity: Asian woman. (nationality South Korean)

Some interesting extra curricular activities: Martial arts(black belt in taekwondo), used-to-be amateur snowboarder (won some competitions, once seriously injured and recovered but now is registered handicap), Social/community service regularly, took some photo shoots for company catalogs... =)

Let me know if I would have to retake the GMAT or just proceed with the application

megababe,

Your overall score is fine for these schools, but your verbal score may raise some concerns for them. What was your AWA? Have you been scoring higher on the verbal section in your practice tests? Scores tend to go up after the initial take, so if you're fairly sure you can raise the verbal score consider retaking. If that means applying in the fall rather than now, no harm done. You will still be young enough (27-28 years old?) to apply this fall with no downside. Based on your post, your English skills seem great.

Your goals seem fine; no harm in stating ambitious goals. Feel free to send me your CV for a closer look.

Thank you so much for your quick reply!
I have not completed updating my CV yet, GMAT was the most logical first step for me at this point.

I am now 29 but will hit 30 by the time I really start applying. would that age limit my chances?

I think I have been the weakest on the SC section, being a non-native speaker (and non-language major), I do not catch that subtle mistakes...Maybe if I take some courses on SC, that might improve my SC in a short period of time?
I have been constantly getting mostly incorrect on SC problems in mock tests. (70~80% of incorrect are SC!!!! ~1 incorrect on CR, ~3 on RC)

I am a little bit concerned because I have heard horrible stories of the 2nd time the score actually going down.
I do not want to end up retaking it 3-4 times like usual Koreans do here!! (it seems like they are very focused on boosting up the score)...
I should study a lot more effectively and be 100% confident when I do decide to retake.
Still thinking and thinking...

Megababe,

Your age would be a minor concern, for this reason: at most of the top schools, only about 10% of accepted applicants have more than about 7 years of work experience; that is, the middle 80% tends to cluster closer to 27-28 years old. So be sure you explain why you have waited to apply, but don't let it stop you from applying.

Yes, you should focus on the SC section or hire a GMAT tutor to drill you on it. It's true that schools prefer applicants to take the GMAT no more than 3 times, but don't worry about taking it a second time. If your score goes down the school will take the higher score (some schools will even take the highest Q or V score from two different tests!).

Good luck to you ...
