The time it takes for a star to change its brightness is directly related to the luminosity of it.
A. no change
B. the luminosity of its brightness
C. the luminosity of a star
D. luminosity of it
E. its luminosity

I was confused about this because I didn't know what they were trying to describe by "luminosity"--the star or the brightness.
The correct answer is E. Can you please explain why?

In this is the case case, then C will be BEST...!

In E , it is not clear that ITS refer to wat .... STAR or BRIGHTNESS... (presence of its creates doubt for reader)

C option makes it clear that luminosity is of STAR not of BRIGHTNESS....!

Martin,

Here is the original statment.

The time it takes for a star to change its brightness is directly related to the luminosity of it.

IMO C is incorrect because it does not obey parallelism. Additionally, the "its" before brightness does not / cannot refer to brightness but rather to the star, otherwise the author would have underlined its brightness. I am sure you'll agree with me that it is errorneous to have a possessive pronoun that modofies a noun next to each other, unless separated by a comma .

Please correct me if my agrument is flawed. Thanks!

its cannot refer to brightness. The subject is star. Considering the rules of parallelism,

The time it takes for a star to change its brightness is directly related to its luminosity.

This will not arise any confusion in the sentence
"Native of" is used for a individual while "Native to" is used for a large group
