That's my point, I can be wrong.

We should think about a parallelism then: of having / of using.
so eliminate A,B,C
What disturbs me is the "they" which can be confusing...
E because "would" cannot go with "had obtained"

AS IF SHE SUSPECTED TWICE!!!! THE USE OF THEN IS OKAY?????

WHATS WRONG WITH THIS ???

we can eliminate A,B and C based on parallelism

left with D and E

why D is correct:
D) of using the information they had obtained to find evidence that would support
Of using is parallel, and "they" clearly refers to Police(plural). because the other noun(lawyer) has to be singular. So they is very clear.

he suspected the police of X and of Y

X and Y have to parallel.


As far as the meaning is concerned,she suspected once.

he suspected the police of having taped her ,who will then use that information.

Did you got me??

She suspected only and only once

the use of "then" is bothering me.
See the sentence reads like this : she suspected police of having done X and then she suspected police of using Y - two consecutive events ???
NO!!

She suspected police of stealing the info and using the info, they had obtained!!

I agree that a past particle HAD is required ....so we could eliminate everyone but C and D.

Now, Between C and D, Y NOT C????? could you please explain.[/i]

"then" is used to signify the sequence of events.

1st stealing info

and then

(2nd) using that info

its simple!

IMO C

I may be wrong but I think the parallelism is between suspected and used because who used the information was her not the police.

I agree with you. I was also very confused between C and D. C means, she suspected only once, and using the informantion is just a follow-up action of taping the line. However, D means, she suspected twice. Finally, I selected D based on parallelism, but I don't have any solid reasoning.
