Can someone please verify?

by 123nobody321 » Sat Aug 31, 2013 6:29 am
Hi,

I just came across a rule regarding command subjunctive, which is always in the following form: bossy verb + that + subject + command subjunctive

So, is the following sentence correct??

I insist, that she go to school

This sentence sounds completely wrong in my ears, but we should have a bossy verb (insist), a "that", the subject (she) and the command subjunctive (go), right?

Answers are much appreciated.

Best,
nobody

Hi 123nobody321,

You're referring to a grammar rule that's based on "command" verbs. While you can refer to this rule in whatever way is easiest for you, the basic idea is this:

Command Verb....THAT.....infinitive of whatever verb comes next.

For your example, you need to remove the comma.

eg I insist that she go to school.

Command Verb = "insist"
Then the word "that"
Infinitive of the next verb: "go"

This sentence is grammatically correct.
