from Knewton free test

The strength of the political advertisement lies not in the candidate's speech but in the portrayal of stories of daily life in the city with positive embellishments that inspire a sense of honor and dignity within the average viewer.

(A)portrayal of stories of daily life in the city with positive embellishments that
(B) fact that it portrays stories of daily life in the city as having positive embellishments that
(C)fact that it portrays stories of daily life in the city, whose positive embellishments
(D)portrayal of stories of daily life in the city, which have positive embellishments and thus
(E)portrayal of stories of daily life in the city, whose positive embellishments

Please explain what is this testing....I selected E which is wrong....looks like I did not get the meaning of this sentence.....

B and C are outright out. Now we are left with A, D and E. D and E change the meaning by shifting the focus on city. The focus of this sentence is on the stories of life in the city not the city itself. So Answer should be A.

Hope it helps.

IMO A

D and E change the meaning. The stories should have positive embellishments to inspire not the city. E uses whose to modify city which is one more reason to eliminate the option.

Well I am not an expert but would like to throw some light on this particular problem.

We all know why B an C is wrong and so no need to discuss that.
Lets come to A,D and E

A - portrayal of stories of daily life in the city with positive embellishments that - Usage of "with" is appropiate here. The "positive embellishments" is the inherent quality of the "stories of daily life in the city" and hence the usage of with is perfect.

D - portrayal of stories of daily life in the city, which have positive embellishments and thus - There is a meaning error in this sentence. "and thus" changes the meaning and essence of the original sentence.

E - portrayal of stories of daily life in the city, whose positive embellishments - incorrect modification, Here "whose" refer to the "city".

The only problem I see in D is "and thus". The focus of D is not on "cities". Its true that "which" generally refer to noun before the comma but at times it dont. We have to deduce what it refers from the surrounding words. In this sentence it do refers clearly to stories and not city.
portrayal of stories of daily life in the city, which have positive embellishments and thus...

since stories is prural "which have" do refer to "stories ( prulal)......". Please refer to Emily dicekenson's letter SC in OG 12 and ron's explanation to it.

E - "whose" do refer to cities.
