A recent and popular self-help book wryly notes that if adolescence was not so painful, it would have a droll comedic aspect, at least in retrospect.

THEY has no clear referent in B AND D.
E: uses being
A: Since it's a hypothetical situation, we need 'were'

IMO D

usage of "if" -- makes 'were' a correct choice..
